WHO CAN ENTER?
Contest open to all legal residents of the 50 U.S. & D.C., the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Canada (excluding residents of Quebec) with internet access, age 18-35 (as of March 31, 2007) (19-35 for Canada), except past grand prize winners of this Contest (within the last five (5) years) or individuals under exclusive contract with a publisher.
DO I NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE TO ENTER?
The ability to write instrumental music to picture is the primary focus of the judging. It would be helpful
to have experience and education, but there are no strict academic or other specific educational
requirements. Participants are not required to have any "credits" or existing music in film or television
projects. The primary focus of the judging is the music that is submitted.
WHY IS THE COMPETITION ONLY OPEN TO PEOPLE BETWEEN 18 AND 35?
The goal of the competition is to give student and entry level composers the opportunity to compete for a prestigious scoring assignment. To achieve this goal and make the competition fair so that those with extensive experience would not unfairly compete with those with less experience, it was determined that an age threshold was the most fair and equitable way to focus the competition on students and entry level composers.
DO I HAVE TO UPLOAD MY MUSIC SUBMISSION TO TCM.COM?

CAN I SUBMIT AN ELECTRONIC (SYNTH/SAMPLER) SCORE?
Yes. The submission of music that you submit may be electronic or live. This will not be a factor in the judging process.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY ENTRY HAS BEEN RECEIVED AND WHAT THE STATUS OF MY ENTRY IS?
Once your completed entry application and music submission has been received, you will receive an email informing you of this. If your entry is incomplete for any reason, we will contact you by phone or email in order to obtain the incomplete information. Although we are unnable to provide a status report for your entry, the 10 finalists will be notified via phone and/or email on or around April 20, 2007. A complete lists of finalists will be posted at http://www.tcm.com/yfcc, and a list of winners will be found on TCM's web site as well as the competition's sponsor web sites.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MUSIC THAT I SUBMIT AS AN ENTRY? WHO OWNS IT?
All entries become the property of the Sponsors and will not be acknowledged or returned. All music submissions will be listened to during the judging process, but will not be used for any other reasons. Limit one (1) entry per person. One (1) winner per person, e-mail address or household. In the event that multiple entries are submitted, the last entry received by TCM shall be deemed the final entry for purposes of judging.
HOW WILL MY ENTRY BE JUDGED?
The judges for the competition are experts in the film music industry who have an interest in young composers and have agreed to serve as judges for this competition. Judges include blue ribbon composers, orchestrators, agents, and others. Each music submission will be listened to by at least two judges as part of the competition. There will be 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on or around April 20, 2007. Semi-finalists will be required to submit written scores of their entry music and provide further information as part of the judging. Five finalists will be selected by the judges on or around May 23, 2007 and the winners will be selected by the final panel of judges on or around August 15, 2007. All prize winners will be posted on the Turner Classic Movies http://www.tcm.com/yfcc website on that date.
The primary factor for the judging is the overall compositional ability of the participant, as evidenced by
the originality, creativity, quality and appropriateness of the music submitted for the clip that the participant has chosen to score. Secondary factors include the quality and readability of the written score (which is required to be submitted if the participant becomes a finalist).
I recommend underlying the above for emphasis.
HOW CAN I ENTER IF I DON'T HAVE INTERNET SERVICE OR ACCESS TO THE WEB?
For technical reasons, it is a requirement for entry in this competition that you have internet access.
Free access is available across the U.S. in libraries and schools. Or you can mail us your entry (see above).
WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
Please feel free to email any questions or comments to tcm@turner.com. We will do our best to answer all questions completely and promptly.
WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE A WRITTEN SCORE AVAILABLE? NOT ALL COMPOSERS READ MUSIC!
Since the grand prize involves writing for a live orchestra (vs. electronic scoring), the skill of writing music in a form that musicians can read is an integral part of the grand prize scoring project. For
this reason, it was determined that reading and writing music was a necessary skill for the winner of
the competition. For that reason, a written score is required to be available from any semi-finalist. The score may be handwritten or computer generated, and the quality of the written score may be a factor in the final judging.
CAN MY WRITTEN SCORE BE PREPARED BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN MYSELF?
It must be prepared by the participant, either handwritten or by computer. As discussed above. The skill of
writing and reading music is vital to the grand prize scoring project. Since the goal of the competition
is to judge the abilities of the composer participant, work done by others is not permitted.
CAN I WORK WITH A WRITING PARTNER?
No. Since it would be impossible to judge the individual creative input of different members of a composing "team" as part of the judging, this is not allowed. To maintain an atmosphere of fairness and
equity, each entry must be written only by the participant and no one else. The competition is designed to focus on individual efforts of composer participants, as opposed to the group efforts of groups of composers or teams.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC SHOULD I WRITE FOR MY SUBMISSION? WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR?
Music entered for the competition should consist of instrumental music (no vocals, lyrics or songs). There are no ground rules for this - the choice of writing style is left to each competition participant. The
originality and uniqueness of each participant will be the primary factor in the judging, however the production values (whether live or electronic instruments are used) and the technical quality of the recording (the mix, noise level, etc.) are not factors that will be considered.
I'M USED TO WORKING WITH TIMECODE ON VIDEO. HOW DO I SYNC MY MUSIC TO THE DIGITAL PICTURE (CLIPS) THAT ARE PROVIDED TO PARTICIPANTS?
This is up to the participant. Since every participant may have different technical requirements in their own
studios, there is no overall technical requirement that the music be synched in any way to the picture.
While the music will be judged in terms of how it works with the clip that is selected by each participant,
it is the responsibility of the participant to sync their music to the picture using whatever methods or
techniques they wish. The clips that are available to participants may be downloaded and copied onto videotape or other media for purposes of preparing entries, so whatever methods each participant normally uses to view video and write music to it can be used. There is no timecode provided as part of the clips, nor is any required for the final entries. However, this in no way prevents a participant who wishes to generate timecode to a clip to aid in synching within their studio from doing so.
HOW CAN SOMEONE JUDGE MY WORK BY LISTENING TO IT ON SMALL COMPUTER SPEAKERS?
While the music for the competition is uploaded using computers, all entries are converted to normal audio CDs for judging. Judges will be listening to the music on high quality audio systems.
If you have additional questions, to submit a question via email to the competition send an email to tcm@turner.com. We will do our best to answer all questions completely and promptly.
